Building Referral Traffic: Winning Visitors via Other Websites

When it comes to website visitors, most SMEs first think of Google. Understandable, but there's a second channel that's often overlooked and, especially for small businesses, worth its weight in gold: referral traffic. These are visitors who come to you via a link on another website. Someone clicks on your name on a partner site, in a directory or in a forum, and lands with you. In this post I'll show you how to build such referrals deliberately, without running ads for it.
What is referral traffic anyway?
Referral simply means "a reference". In your statistics, every visitor who comes via a link from an external website shows up as referral traffic. The opposite is direct traffic (someone types in your address) or organic traffic (someone comes via Google search).
Why is this channel so valuable? First, it costs nothing per click, a link set once brings visitors for years. Second, these people come with a head start of trust: they were recommended by a site they already like. It's like digital word of mouth.
Where do such referrals arise?
Referral traffic doesn't fall from the sky. It arises where your name or your service is linked. The most important sources for Swiss SMEs are:
- Partners and suppliers: companies you work with link to you on their reference or partner page.
- Business directories: reputable Swiss directories like local.ch or industry-specific platforms send interested visitors your way.
- Associations and clubs: if you're a member of an industry association, your entry with a link belongs in the member list.
- Review portals: profiles with real customer voices often link directly to your website.
- Press and blogs: a piece in a local newspaper or a guest article brings both visitors and credibility.
How to build links from partner sites
The most honest and effective path leads through real relationships. Think about it: who do you already work with anyway? A carpenter who cooperates with an architect; a fiduciary who recommends a lawyer; a restaurant that buys from the local wine merchant. In all these cases, a mutual link on the website is natural and honest.
Approach your partners actively. A friendly "May I link to you on my partner page, and you to me?" opens surprisingly many doors. What matters is that the link makes sense: a recommendation from a thematically fitting site is worth far more than ten random entries. Google remembers whether a reference comes from real context or seems bought.
Using directories and reviews
List yourself in reputable directories that fit your industry and region. Pay attention to one thing: name, address and phone number must be written identically everywhere. This consistency strengthens not only referral traffic, but also your local visibility on Google. Avoid dubious mass-listing services, a few good, fitting entries beat a hundred random ones.
Review portals are a double win: satisfied customers leave their voice there, and other interested people click from there to your site. Actively ask for reviews, most customers are happy to help if you ask them nicely. You'll find more on this in further posts.
Content that others gladly link to
The most sustainable referral traffic arises when others link to you voluntarily because your content is useful. A helpful guide, an honest checklist, a calculator or a local overview, such pages get shared and recommended. Ask yourself: what on my website is so good that someone would pass it on voluntarily? If you have an answer to that, you've found the best link magnet.
Measuring success
So that you know what works, look at your statistics regularly. Tools like Google Analytics show you exactly which website your visitors come from and how they behave. That way you can see which partners and directories really bring something, and top up there deliberately, instead of putting energy into dead channels.
A tip: sort your referral sources by visitor number and by how long these visitors stay. A link that brings ten interested people with a real need is worth more than one with a hundred fleeting clicks.
Patience and care
Referral traffic isn't a quick switch, but a network that grows over time. Every partner, every entry, every good piece of content is another thread in this net. Nurture your relationships, keep your entries up to date, and check now and then whether links still work. This way, over months, a second, stable pillar emerges alongside Google search, one that no one can switch off for you.
