SEO or Google Ads? The Right Choice for Your Budget

At some point almost every SME asks itself the same question: should I invest in SEO or Google Ads? Both bring you to the top of the Google page, but in completely different ways, at different speeds and with different costs. The honest answer isn't "one is better", but "it depends". In this article I show you on what exactly, so that you deploy your budget where it brings you the most.
I build websites and take care of their visibility. Even so, you won't get a sales pitch here, but a sober decision aid. Sometimes advertising is the right thing, sometimes patience.
What really distinguishes SEO and Google Ads
Both terms revolve around Google search, but mean two different things.
- SEO (search engine optimisation) ensures that your page appears higher up in the unpaid results. You don't pay per click, but invest work in good content and clean technology.
- Google Ads are the paid advertisements right at the top and bottom of the search page, usually marked "Sponsored". You pay for every click, and as soon as you stop paying, the ad disappears.
The most important difference: SEO is a foundation that carries over time. Google Ads is a tap you turn on and off.
Google Ads: quickly visible, but only for money
The big advantage of ads is speed. Set up today, at the top tomorrow. Anyone launching a new service, needing to fill a bottleneck or wanting to promote an offer is right with ads.
What ads are especially suited for:
- Quick start: you need enquiries immediately and can't wait months.
- Testing: you want to find out which terms and offers even attract interest.
- Seasonal: a time-limited offer that only counts now.
The catch: as soon as you turn off the budget, the visibility is gone. And in contested industries, individual clicks in Switzerland can cost several francs. Ads reliably bring visitors, but they are rented, not bought.
SEO: slower buildup, lasting return
SEO reverses the logic. At the beginning you see little, then more and more, and the result stays, even without ongoing payments. A page that ranks high for "carpenter Winterthur" brings visitors month after month, without every click costing something.
What makes SEO strong:
- Sustainable: once built up, it carries over years.
- Trust: many people deliberately click the unpaid results, not the ads.
- Cheaper per visitor: over time the cost per click sinks towards zero.
The honest disadvantage: it takes time. Until SEO takes effect, several months often pass. Anyone who needs revenue tomorrow won't be happy with SEO alone. And the basis is a technically clean, fast website, without this foundation every optimisation remains patchwork.
Which channel suits which goal?
Instead of "either-or", the question helps: what do you want to achieve, and how much time do you have?
Google Ads are worthwhile if: you need enquiries quickly, are promoting a time-limited offer, testing a new market or in a phase where you can't afford to wait.
SEO is worthwhile if: you plan long-term, have a limited monthly budget that shouldn't constantly need topping up, and want to be found lastingly in your region.
For most SMEs in Schaffhausen and Winterthur, SEO is the more important lever, because it builds an asset instead of an ongoing item. But at the very start it can be wise to combine both.
Why the combination is often the strongest
In practice the two paths don't exclude each other, they complement each other. A typical roadmap looks like this: you start with Google Ads to be visible immediately and to learn which search terms bring real enquiries. These insights feed into your SEO work. While SEO slowly picks up speed, the ads keep the enquiries flowing.
As soon as your page ranks organically at the top, you can gradually lower the advertising budget, or keep it running in a targeted way for especially contested terms. That way you don't pay forever for something you've long since earned.
What this means for the budget
A simple rule of thumb: a tight budget and patience speak for SEO. Urgent need and some room to manoeuvre speak for ads. In the medium term the cheapest strategy is usually to invest in SEO early and use ads as a bridge until the organic visibility takes hold.
Caution is advised with providers who "guarantee" quick top placements. Serious SEO promises no miracles overnight, it builds solidly. If you'd like to go deeper, you'll find under other articles understandable pieces on SEO fundamentals and local visibility.
