Storytelling for SMEs: winning customers with stories

Most SME websites do not tell a story, they list one. A list of services, a few keywords like «competent» and «reliable», done. The problem: exactly the same thing appears on your competitor's site too. Anyone who only lists sounds interchangeable. Anyone who tells a story stays in the mind. That is precisely what storytelling is about: not grand novels, but an honest brand story that shows who you are and why someone should trust you in particular.
In this article I will show you how, as a small business, you can build your story, step by step, without marketing speak and without having to invent anything.
Why stories sell
People rarely decide on facts alone. We buy from people we find likeable and whom we trust. A story creates exactly this trust, because it makes you tangible. It shows a person instead of a facade.
On top of that comes a simple psychological effect: we remember stories better than lists. A concrete episode of how you solved a tricky customer problem sticks, while the platitude «solution-oriented» is forgotten instantly. A good brand story therefore works doubly for you: it convinces and it stays in the memory.
The building blocks of a good brand story
Storytelling sounds like a big word, but at its core it is simple. Every convincing story has a few building blocks you put together:
- The reason: Why does your business exist? What led you to go self-employed or to choose exactly this trade?
- The hurdle: Which problem do you solve for your customers, and why was that not a given? This is where it gets concrete and interesting.
- The path: How do you work? What do you do differently from others? This is your common thread.
- The result: What do your customers gain from it? Best shown with a real example, not merely claimed.
Important: the hero of your story is not you, but your customer. You are the guide who helps them reach their goal. This small shift makes all the difference.
How to find your own story
Many think their story is boring. «I just do good work.» Yet that is often exactly where it lies. Ask yourself a few honest questions: What gripped you about your first job? Which mistake did you make in the past and never again? What do your customers appreciate most when they come to you?
Write the answers down without smoothing them over. A credible story emerges from such moments. You do not have to dramatise anything, quite the opposite. A small, real incident works more strongly than the grand, polished success story that no one believes.
Where the story belongs on your website
Your brand story does not have to be squeezed into a single long text. It lives spread across the whole website:
- On the homepage: one or two sentences that immediately show what matters to you, not a slogan, but a genuine thought.
- On the about page: here there is room for the detailed version, with a photo and a personal tone.
- In the services: a short example from practice makes every service more vivid.
- In testimonials: your customers tell a piece of your story too, which often comes across as more credible than any self-praise.
Common mistakes in storytelling
Storytelling quickly tips into the embarrassing when overdone. The most common mistakes I see with SMEs: too much pathos («We live for your dreams»), invented emotions and a tone that does not suit the business. A joinery does not have to sound like an advertising agency.
Stick to your own language. If you speak plainly with customers in conversation, your website should sound just the same. And: less is more. An honest episode in three sentences beats an embellished story over half a page. If you want to go deeper into the topic of good text, you will find suitable guides under other articles.
From telling to acting
A story is not an end in itself. It should move your visitors to a step, an enquiry, a call, a quote. So make sure a clear next step follows the story. Anyone who feels understood by your story is ready, at exactly the right moment, to get in touch.
This is exactly where storytelling pays off: anonymous visitors become people who feel they already know you a little, and that is the best foundation for working together.
If you like, I will help you find your story and tell it cleanly on a website. An honest brand story does not have to be expensive, a onepager starts at CHF 890 with me. Write to me with no obligation via the contact form, and we will look together at what your story is.
