What is SEO? The basics explained clearly for small businesses

Perhaps you have heard the word a hundred times already: SEO. An agency mentioned it, an acquaintance boasted about it, or it appeared in an email promising you «more visibility». But what actually is SEO, and do you, as a small business, really need to concern yourself with it? The short answer: yes, a little. The good news: it is far less mysterious than many make out. In this article I will explain the basics the way I would explain them to a client at the kitchen table.

What SEO is, in one sentence

SEO stands for «Search Engine Optimization». It means everything you do so that your website appears higher up on Google when someone searches for your services. Whoever types «joiner Winterthur» should find you, ideally on the first page, because hardly anyone looks at the second page.

At its core it is about helping Google understand two things: What is your page about? and Can people trust it? Everything that makes up SEO comes back to these two questions.

How Google actually decides

Google tirelessly sends little programs through the internet that read and classify every page. When someone then searches for something, Google sorts thousands of pages in a fraction of a second and shows the ones that fit best. «Fit best» here means above all: relevant, trustworthy and user-friendly.

Important to understand: Google works for its users, not for you. That sounds harsh, but it is liberating. Because it means the best SEO strategy is always the same, make an honestly good website that genuinely helps real people. Tricks that try to get around this do not work in the long run.

The three pillars of the basics

If you leave out all the jargon, SEO rests on three simple pillars:

  • Content: Good, clearly written text that answers your customers' questions. If someone wants to know what a service costs or how a process works, your page should explain that in an understandable way.
  • Technology: A page that loads quickly, looks good on a phone and is cleanly built. Google prefers pages that are pleasant to use.
  • Trust: Other websites that link to you, good reviews and a well-kept presence signal to Google that you are a serious provider.

You do not have to do everything perfectly at once. But every one of these pillars you work on helps.

Keywords: the language of your customers

A term that always comes up with SEO is «keyword». It sounds technical, but means something very simple: the words your customers type into Google. Here lies a common trap. Many businesses describe themselves in the technical language of their trade, but customers search in everyday language.

An example: you might call yourself a «specialist for building envelopes». But your customer types «seal roof Schaffhausen». If these everyday words appear nowhere on your page, Google cannot make the connection. The first, often underestimated SEO step is therefore: listen to how your customers talk about what you offer, and use exactly those words.

What SEO is not

So that you do not have false expectations, three honest clarifications:

  • SEO is not instant: Unlike paid ads, SEO works slowly. It can take weeks or months before anything moves. In return, the effect lasts without you paying per click.
  • SEO is not a one-off: It is more care than construction. A page that is never updated loses ground over time.
  • SEO is not magic: Anyone who «guarantees» you first place is not to be trusted. No one can do that, not even me. You can only create the conditions for things to go well.

Where you, as a small business, are best to start

You do not have to become an SEO expert. But a few basics already get you a long way. Make sure every important service gets its own page with clear text. Name your location so that you are found regionally. Make sure the page is fast and pleasant on a phone. And set up your free Google Business Profile, especially for local businesses this is one of the biggest levers there is.

The beauty is: all of these points are not only good for Google, but above all for your visitors. A clear, fast, honest website convinces people, and Google notices that.

SEO does not have to be a closed book. If the foundation of your website is right, the largest part of the work is done. If you would like to go deeper, you will find practical guides on local visibility and loading time in my other articles. And if you would rather have someone lay the clean foundation for you, simply get in touch with no obligation via the contact form, I will gladly explain what really makes sense for your business.
