Optimising Your Google Business Profile: Visible in Local Search

When someone in Schaffhausen or Winterthur searches for «trustee near me» or «hairdresser Schaffhausen», who gets the call is decided in seconds. Usually it's the business that appears right at the top of the little map. And that spot depends to a large extent on a single, free thing: the Google Business Profile. In this article I'll show you step by step how to set it up completely and optimise it so that you're reliably found locally.

What is the Google Business Profile anyway?

The Google Business Profile (formerly «Google My Business») is your free listing with Google. It controls what appears about you when someone searches for your name or your industry: on the map, to the right of the search results and on Google Maps. Name, address, opening hours, photos, reviews, all of it is managed here.

The nice thing about it: you don't need expensive software or an advertising contract for this. A well-maintained profile is the single biggest lever for local visibility, and you have it fully in your own hands.

Step 1: Create and verify the profile

If you don't have a profile yet, create it under «Google Business Profile». Google asks for name, category and address. Afterwards you have to confirm that the business really belongs to you, usually by postcard with a code, sometimes by phone or video. This step is mandatory: without verification your profile won't appear.

If a listing already exists that you never created yourself (this happens often), you can claim it. Google generates some such listings automatically, so take back control.

Step 2: Fill in all details completely

Complete profiles are preferred by Google and used more by people. Take the time to really fill in every field:

  • Exact address and phone: exactly as they appear on your website too, character for character.
  • Opening hours: including public holidays and holiday periods. Nothing annoys customers more than a closed door despite «open».
  • Choose the main category precisely: «painting business» instead of just «tradesperson». The more precise, the better the matches.
  • Services and attributes: what do you offer, is there parking, is access barrier-free? Every detail helps.
  • Short description: a few honest sentences about what you do and for whom, with your region in the text.

Step 3: Real photos instead of stock images

Images are viewed strikingly often in the profile, and they build trust. Upload real photos: the exterior view (so people find you), the interior, your work, the team. A friendly face or a finished project works stronger than any stock image. Update the photos now and then, a lively profile also signals to Google that the business is active.

Step 4: Collect and respond to reviews

Reviews are doubly valuable: they convince people, and they are a clear signal for Google. A business with many good, recent reviews looks reliable and moves up.

  • Ask actively: most satisfied customers are happy to leave a review, you just have to ask politely, ideally right after the work is done.
  • Make it easy: Google provides a direct review link. Send it by email or as a QR code.
  • Always respond: to praise and to criticism, matter-of-factly and kindly. Future customers read exactly these responses.

Step 5: Keep the profile lively

A profile is not a form you fill in once and forget. Via the posts function you can share short updates: a new offer, holiday times, a completed reference project. Also answer the questions users ask. Anyone who maintains their profile regularly stays more visible than the competition that last touched their listing two years ago.

How your website plays a part

The business profile only develops its full effect together with a clean website. Above all, it's important that name, address and phone appear identically everywhere, in the profile, on the website and in directories. Discrepancies confuse Google. In addition, location references in the text and a technical hint in the code (LocalBusiness) help, telling Google directly who you are and where. Patience pays off

Local visibility builds up over weeks, not overnight, but it lasts if the foundation is right. Set up the profile completely, collect reviews, keep everything current: this routine reliably moves you forward in a manageable region like Schaffhausen and Winterthur, because here proximity counts.
