Local SEO for SMEs: Reaching Customers From Your Region Online

Most people today search online first before reaching for the phone, even when the right business is only two streets away. «Heating emergency service Winterthur», «trustee near me», «optician Schaffhausen»: whoever is visible for such searches gets the enquiry. That is exactly what Local SEO is about, making your business findable for the people in your region. The good news: this is no wizardry and doable even without a big budget. Above all it takes a systematic approach.

In this article I'll show you how to build local visibility step by step, sorted by what really works.

What Local SEO actually is

Local SEO means that your business appears in searches with a local reference, on the map, in the so-called «Local Pack» with the three highlighted results and in the normal results. Google decides based on three criteria: relevance (does your offering match the search?), distance (how close are you to the person searching?) and prominence (how trustworthy and established do you seem?).

You can work on all three points. You can't change distance, but relevance and prominence are in your own hands, and that is exactly where a good strategy starts.

Understanding what your customers search for

Before you optimise anything, an honest question is worthwhile: which words do your customers actually type in? It's rarely the official industry term. Nobody searches for «sanitary engineering service», but for «plumber Schaffhausen» or «dripping tap Winterthur».

  • Think like a customer: note the typical problems and concerns people come to you with, in their words, not yours.
  • Add the location: local searches combine service and place. «Hairdresser», «hairdresser Winterthur Töss», «women's cut Schaffhausen», each variant has its own intent.
  • Listen for questions: «what does… cost», «who does…», «near me», such phrasings show how real people search.

These terms are the basis. They determine what you write about on your website and how you describe your profile.

The foundation: profile and website

The single biggest lever is your Google Business Profile (formerly «Google My Business»). It is free and controls what appears about you on the map and next to the search results. Fill it in completely: exact address, phone, opening hours, the right category and real photos. A well-maintained, current profile is clearly preferred by Google.

Your website is the second pillar. It must signal clearly to Google who you are and where you operate:

  • Consistent details: name, address and phone should appear identically everywhere, on the website, in the profile, in every directory. Discrepancies confuse Google.
  • Location in the text: name your region naturally on the important pages, instead of hiding it.
  • Own pages per service: anyone offering several services gives each its own, well-described page, that creates relevance for each individual search.
  • Fast and mobile: local searches mostly happen on the move on a phone. A slow page loses the click.

Building prominence: listings and reviews

Google wants to know whether your business is also present outside your own website. Two things pay into this.

First, directory listings: local.ch, search.ch, the trade directory of your municipality or your association. Every consistent listing with the same contact details strengthens your credibility. What matters here is care over quantity, better ten clean listings than fifty contradictory ones.

Second, reviews: they convince people and are at the same time a strong signal for Google. Ask satisfied customers actively and kindly, make it easy with a direct link, and respond to every review, to praise as to criticism. Future customers see this too.

Staying at it pays off

Local SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Visibility builds up over weeks and months, but then lasts if the foundation is right. The nice thing: precisely in a manageable region like Schaffhausen, Winterthur and the surrounding area, proximity counts especially, here even small businesses can overtake large providers if they do their homework.
