Internal linking: better rankings through a clever link structure

Most conversations about SEO revolve around backlinks, that is, links from other websites to yours. Yet perhaps the most effective lever is often overlooked: internal linking. This means all the links that lead within your own website from one page to the next. They cost nothing, you have them completely in your hands, and set correctly they help Google enormously to understand and better evaluate your site.
In this article I show you without jargon how internal linking works and how to use it deliberately for your ranking.
What internal linking actually does
Imagine your website like a building. The links are the doors and corridors that connect one room with the next. Whoever builds no doors, their finest rooms remain undiscovered, by visitors and by Google. Internal linking fulfils three tasks at once:
- It helps people: Visitors find fitting further content and stay longer on your site.
- It helps Google find: The search engine follows the links and thus discovers all your pages, even those that lie deep in the structure.
- It distributes value: Every link passes on a piece of trust and authority. This effect is often called link equity.
Steering link equity deliberately
Your home page is usually the strongest page, most external links point to it and it sits right at the top of the structure. Through internal links you can pass on part of this strength to exactly the subpages that are important to you: your most important services, your sales pages, your best blog articles.
The principle is simple: what is important to you commercially should receive many internal links and never be more than two or three clicks away from the home page. A page that is only reachable through a hidden menu signals to Google: «This can't be that important.» That is exactly what you want to avoid.
The right link text makes the difference
The visible text of a link, the so-called anchor text, tells Google what the destination page is about. «Click here» wastes this chance completely. Descriptive is always better.
- Say what is coming: «More on our joinery work in Schaffhausen» is worlds better than «find out more».
- Stay natural: The link text should make sense within the sentence, not come across as a slapped-on keyword.
- Vary it: Do not always link the same page with exactly the same wording, that quickly feels mechanical.
A structure that thinks along
Good internal linking is not random back and forth, but follows a clear order. A kind of topic hierarchy has proven itself: an overarching page on a topic links to several more in-depth subpages, and these link back. This creates thematic clusters that clearly signal to Google what you stand for.
An example from practice: a main page «Web design» refers to individual articles on loading time, local visibility and cost. Each of these articles in turn links to the others where it fits thematically. This is exactly how the other articles in this blog are linked with one another.
Common mistakes you can easily avoid
Internal linking is quickly explained, but often implemented half-heartedly. These stumbling blocks I see most often:
- Orphan pages: Content that not a single link points to. Google hardly finds it, and visitors not at all.
- Too many links on one page: If every sentence contains a link, each individual one loses weight. Set links deliberately and sparingly.
- Broken links: References to deleted or renamed pages lead nowhere and cost trust. Check them now and then.
- Everything from the menu: The navigation alone is not enough. The most valuable internal links sit in the middle of the text, in the right context.
How to start today
You do not have to rebuild everything at once. Begin with your three most important pages and ask yourself: do I link sensibly onward from there? And do enough other pages point there? Even this small exercise surprisingly often uncovers gaps that can be closed with a few moves.
Internal linking is one of the few SEO levers that lie completely in your control and cost nothing except a little care. If you like, I will look at the structure of your website and make sure your important pages get the attention they deserve, simply get in touch via the contact form.
