The 10 Most Common SEO Mistakes That Cost SMEs Rankings

Many SME websites rank worse than they should, not because of stiff competition, but because of small mistakes that no one notices. The good news: most SEO mistakes are homemade and can be fixed without you having to become an SEO expert. Let me show you the ten pitfalls I come across most often in practice, and how to tackle each of them.
1. No clear answer to a real search query
The most common SEO mistake happens before any technical detail: a page doesn't even know what it wants to be found for. If a page talks about «solutions», «services» and «quality» but never names the specific word customers type in, it won't be found for it either. For each page, ask yourself: which one question do I answer here? Write that answer clearly, in your customers' words, not in marketing speak.
2. Every page with the same title
The page title (what appears as the blue heading in a Google result) is one of the most important signals of all. Yet many SMEs give every subpage the same title, usually just the company name. That means you throw away the chance to rank for a relevant topic on every page. Give each page its own descriptive title that contains the topic and, ideally, the location.
3. Missing or duplicate meta descriptions
The meta description is the short text below the title in the search result. It is not a direct ranking factor, but it helps decide whether someone clicks. If it is missing, Google cobbles something together, often unsuitable. Write two inviting sentences per page containing the most important search term.
4. The website is too slow on mobile
Speed is a confirmed ranking factor, and at the same time a conversion factor. A page that takes several seconds to load on mobile loses visitors before they have even seen anything. The most common causes are huge, uncompressed images and too many embedded plugins. Compressed images in a modern format and a lean structure solve most of that.
5. Content that consists only of images
A beautiful page that carries its message only in images is almost empty to Google. Search engines read text. If your services, locations and arguments are exclusively contained in graphics, the material you'd be found by is missing. Make sure the important statements also appear as real text on the page.
6. Forgotten alt texts and heading structure
Two small, often overlooked points with a big impact:
- Alt texts: Every image should have a short description. That helps Google classify the image and makes the page accessible.
- Heading hierarchy: A page needs a logical structure with one main heading and sensible subheadings. If everything is formatted the same size, you take away Google's orientation.
7. Inconsistent contact details
An underestimated SEO mistake, especially for local SMEs: name, address and phone number appear one way here, another way there, on the website, in the Google profile, in directories. Such discrepancies confuse Google and weaken your local visibility. Write these details identically everywhere. How this ties in with local search I explore in more depth in other articles.
8. No internal linking
Many SME sites are a collection of islands: every subpage exists on its own, with no paths in between. Internal links, that is references from one page to another, help visitors read on and show Google which pages belong together and matter. Link related content naturally from within the text.
9. Thin, interchangeable content
Three sentences per service are rarely enough. For a page to rank, it has to answer the question behind it better than others, with concrete examples, answers to real questions and your experience. It's not about as many words as possible, but about real added value. A page that genuinely helps beats ten thin ones.
10. Set up once and never touched again
The last and perhaps most expensive mistake: seeing SEO as a one-off task. Search behaviour changes, competitors catch up, content ages. Anyone who never updates their site slowly falls behind. You don't have to constantly rebuild everything, but looking at it a few times a year, refreshing content and checking what works makes a big difference over time.
Where to start best
You don't have to solve all ten points at once. Start at the top: clear topics per page, individual titles, fast loading times. Even these three often bring more than you'd think. The rest follows step by step.
If you're not sure which of these SEO mistakes apply to you, I'm happy to take a look with you and tell you honestly where the biggest lever lies. Just get in touch via the contact form, I look forward to it.
