Building Local Landing Pages for Multiple Locations Properly

If you're active in several places, a shop in Schaffhausen, one in Winterthur, plus perhaps a catchment area in Zurich, sooner or later you hit the same question: is a single page listing all locations enough? Or does each place need its own page? The short answer: dedicated local landing pages bring you considerably more visibility, but only if you go about it correctly. Otherwise you saddle yourself with duplicate content problems and end up annoyed at effort without effect.
Why a dedicated page per location?
Google wants to deliver people the most fitting answer. If someone searches for «carpenter Winterthur», a page that talks specifically about your Winterthur business is more relevant than a general overview page. A dedicated landing page per place gives you the chance to serve exactly that local search.
Added to this is the trust of your visitors. Whoever finds a page with the right address, the opening hours and a familiar face feels looked after. That's no SEO trick, but simply a better experience, and Google notices when people stay on a page satisfied.
The main problem: duplicate content
The biggest trap is at the same time the most convenient shortcut: you build one page, copy it for each location and only swap the place name. «Your carpenter in Winterthur» becomes «Your carpenter in Schaffhausen», otherwise everything stays the same. That's called duplicate content, almost identical content on several addresses.
Google rarely penalises this directly, but something almost worse happens: the search engine doesn't know which of your near-identical pages to show, and in the end shows none of them really well. Your pages compete against each other instead of winning. All the effort fizzles out.
How to fill each page with real value
The way out is not a text trick, but genuine, location-specific content. Ask yourself for each location page: what is really different here? Surprisingly much, if you look closely:
- Concrete details: address, directions, parking options, opening hours and the person responsible on site.
- Local references: neighbourhoods and municipalities you serve from this location, as well as typical concerns of your customers there.
- Own examples: projects, references or photos from exactly this place, not the same images on all pages.
- Genuine voices: reviews from customers of this location come across as more credible than general praise.
You don't have to reinvent every sentence. A short, honest introduction per place, a few concrete details and fitting images are often already enough to make each page stand on its own. Better three careful location pages than ten empty clones.
Structure that Google and people understand
Give each page a clear, telling address, for example yourcompany.ch/winterthur. Set an unambiguous main heading with place and service, such as «Carpentry in Winterthur». Link the location pages visibly to one another and from the homepage, so nobody has to search.
A technical detail is also helpful: stored location data (in the background as so-called structured data), so Google cleanly recognises address, phone number and opening hours. Also connect each page with the matching Google Business Profile of the location. How this interacts I've described in other articles on local visibility.
When the effort is worthwhile
Honestly: not every business needs ten location pages. If you're really present in two or three places and want to win customers there, one dedicated, well-made page each is clearly worthwhile. If you only have a warehouse without customer contact, a listing on the contact page is perfectly enough.
As a rough guide: a clean one-pager starts with me from CHF 890, a multi-page website with its own location pages from CHF 1'900, depending on how many places and how much content are added. The most important thing is not the price, but that every page has a real reason to exist.
Are you unsure whether dedicated location pages are worthwhile for your business, and how many? Write me a quick note about what you have in mind. I'll look at your situation honestly and tell you what makes sense and what you can save yourself. Here's the way to contact.
